Season 2 : Episode 15 – The Post-Holiday Report

It’s a new year, and the Gomers are trying to get back into the swing of things after a long holiday season – with mixed results.  Join them as they talk about their annual training run together, getting back on the bandwagon after travel and Christmas, and running in the single digits, through exotic cities, with screaming knee pain, and while wearing parkas.

And in non-running-related, is it possible to maintain a healthy marriage while playing New Super Mario Wii?

Its a dealbreaker.
It’s a dealbreaker.

This week’s Monday Survey is all about training schedules: Do you have one? How closely do you follow it? Does splitting a long run into two chunks count? Happy Running!

Glad to see you guys back again after a break for Christmas. I’m excited for you two to finish your first marathon! I am hoping to run my third and fourth marathons this year.

Hey guys. I think it’s important to understand why you do the long runs. Found this at http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/rununiv/marathonlongrun.htm

“With long runs during a marathon program, you are trying to accomplish two distinct purposes. On the one hand, you are trying to maximize your ability to burn fat and spare your limited muscle carbohydrate (glycogen) stores as well as improving your leg strength and resistance to fatigue (both physical fatigue and mental fatigue). You are also trying to teach your body to better handle lowered blood glucose levels. On the other hand, you are trying to become more economical at your marathon race pace (learning to burn less fuel for a given pace) along with testing out your race equipment and nutritional plan. You also want to give the mind a taste of the focus and determination that will be required in the latter stages of the marathon itself.”
