Season 2 : Episode 10 – The Re-reveal November 10th, 2009

Ok, this time it’s final.  The Gomers have decided on a new marathon, AGAIN, and it’s a good one.  Join them as they spend the next 20 weeks praying that the thing doesn’t get cancelled.  But hey, if it does, that means more episodes, right?  Maybe this is the podcast that will never end…

This week’s Monday Survey:  We’re looking for “First Race Stories.”  Share the story of that first race, or your first long race, to motivate the Gomernation to reach higher heights.  Or just to make us laugh at the newbie-ness of it all.  Whichever, if you can do it in a paragraph or less, tell us your first race story!

  1. My first race story isn’t anything special, so I’ll leave you with these tidbits:

    Tony, the dude in the green suit at the 5k had to be Greenman from Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. For all the TV talk you guys do, I can’t believe you don’t watch that show! It’s like Seinfeld but on crack!

    Oh, and quitting coffee cold turkey is hell (if you drink a lot). I switched to green tea, just enough caffeine to stave off the crippling headache, but much better for you.

    I love albums that end the way they begin, you guys should check out The Cinematic Orchestra’s album Ma Fleur. Some good running tracks, very deep and ethereal, great for repeat listening.

  2. I joined a running class in college – for credits and to get in shape. I had never run before, and the description was super vague. On the first day, the teacher sent us out for a 10-minute run. I freaked out, “I can’t run for 10 minutes!” He looked at me like I was crazy, “Why are you taking a running class then?” Clearly, I had no idea what it was about. I dropped that class immediately and started running on my own. I ran a 5K in 32 minutes later that year. Ha! Showed him.

  3. My first (really notable) race: The Chesebro Half Marathon… part of The Dole Great Race in Agoura Hills, CA. I almost cried… it was the day after a rain. With at least a pound of mud on each shoe, we went up and down excruciating hills, one painful step at a time. My husband and I stupidly only trained on flat ground. However… you can imagine how we felt when we finished!!! That’s the best feeling. Plus there were some very impressive runners there also commenting on how difficult the race was. Gotta PUSH THOSE LIMITS!!!! :)

  4. Have you guys looked at the course elevation for that GA marathon?!?! Not a lot of elevation change in terms of feet, but it’s over and over again…up and down the hills. Before you commit, take a look at the Mardi Gras marathon on Feb 28th in New Orleans. It’s an inaugural rock-n-roll race which would fit nicely with your first marathon theme! And, perhaps most importantly, I’ll bet it’s a LOT flatter.

  5. I haven’t finished listening to this weeks podcast yet, but I just wanted to chime in and say- “I RAN A 5K”. That’s the way you say it. I ran cross-country for four years of high school and I never heard it said differently. That is all. =]

  6. Hey Gomers! Congrats on setting a new goal! Rather than write about my first race, I figured I would write about my first marathon, which was the Chicago marathon this past October.

    After six months of training, I felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety as I was shivering in 35 degree weather at the start. My only goal was to finish, though I would have liked to have been under four hours. The gun went off and I was SO HAPPY to be running! I ran with a girl from my local running group and we supported each other though an amazing 15 miles. Miles 16, 17, and 18 were the hardest physical thing I have ever done. My goal was just to put one foot in front of the other. I lost my partner at mile 18, but broke through the wall and miles 19 – 26 went by in a snap! I was in pain, but I had pinned the words “To by my own hero” on my shirt and that motivated me through.

    With numb feet, painful knees, stiff hips, and a fighting spirit, I passed the finish line in 4 hours and 20 minutes. At that moment, all I wanted to do was tell my husband I love him! The sense of achievement was amazing and made all the hard work worthwhile.

    The best piece of advice I can give came from a woman standing beside me at the start. She was in her 60′s and running her THIRTEENTH marathon! She said, “Run it like three races…two 10 miles and a 6.” The marathon is a mental battle and that really helped make it achievable in the hardest moments.

  7. My first race was YOUR first race, the half in Phoenix in Jan 09. I’m totally hooked now. Since then I’ve run 5 marathons and 6 halfs! I’ve gone mad. I’m headed to Malibu tomorrow morning for the marathon there. Picture me as Charlie Sheen with running shoes (yes – WITH the cocktail and cigar!). I’m not a traditional runner… Next year my goal is 12 marathons in 12 months, and…to quit smoking. Thanks for the fun podcasts!

  9. I’m doing my first 1/2 marathon Sunday Nov 15th, the San Antonio Rock & Roll. My goal is to cross the finish line.

  10. Hey Gomers, I’m an American, originally from PA, and have been enjoying listening to your podcast from Mali, West Africa where I and family am now living. I have never run a marathon, but I vicariously cheered on my sister when she finished her first marathon, (the Marine Corp Marathon in DC), in October of this year. She is a real inspiration to me, and your podcast is as well. Thanks for doing a podcast for the regular person.

  11. I ran my first half marathon with a friend I met at my church small group. We ran the Eisenhower half marathon in Abilene, KS. There were like 200-250 runners total. In fact, the “starting gun” was everyone just shouting “Yee Haw!” That’s small town Kansas for ya. The race organizers were so nice….actually, everyone was really nice. There wasn’t a lot of hoopla with this race, but I felt so welcomed and supported, I’d totally run this race again. It was a great first race.

  12. Hey Yall – my wife and I just finished the McDonalds 1/2 marathon in Richmond VA this weekend. It was great. Because we had a tough training regiment, the race was a piece of cake. I was at the start thinking that I should have switched to the full marathon “for fun”. But, we had a great time and I am definitely going to start training for a full marathon. it’s addictive!
